The New England Patriots are an American football team located in the Greater Boston area of Massachusetts, USA. Their home stadium is Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. The Patriots were founded on November 16, 1959, by Billy Sullivan. In the early days of the team's establishment, the team was named the "Boston Patriots" and was one of the founding members of the American Football League (AFL). In 1970, the National League and the American League merged, and the Patriots joined the National Football League (NFL). In 1971, the Patriots moved their home stadium to Foxborough and changed their name to the New England Patriots. The Patriots' division in the NFL is the American League East.
